- Abstract
This article describes how a coordinator of student support at an elementary school was able to determine teacher needs and decide on an approach to help formulate a response to the problems. The article notes that inclusion of special needs students in the general education classroom presents teachers with new challenges in dealing with an already diverse group of students. The coordinator found that teachers were more likely to find helpful skills through professional development activities rather than through inservice activities. The coordinator describes five steps that are useful in planning a professional development program.
