- Title
Fisheries scientists sign letter urging protection of forage fish.
- Abstract
The article reports that the Marine Fish Conservation Network (MFCN) has released a letter urging the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service to revise how annual catch limits for U.S. fisheries are set. MFCN argued that forage fish population are threatened due to poor management and high demand for catches which resulted from the rapid growth of the global aquaculture industry. Tim Ragen of the Marine Mammal Commission claimed that fisheries management failed to address the issue of how large-scale removal of fish biomass affects marine ecosystem.
