- Authors

- Abstract
This article develops a meta-analysis of data relating to time use in dual-career families. The authors examine time management surveys completed by different members of households in order to determine the validity of different survey methods. Observations of the activities that family members engaged in as part of their everyday lives are considered. Comparisons between ethnographic video data and information gathered through the experience sampling method (ESM), which entails randomly collected self reports of daily activities, are considered. The central role played by the kitchen in family life is noted. Studies comparing time use diaries with ethnographic video data are also noted. The authors conclude that time-use diaries provide better data than the ESM.
