- Abstract
The article discusses lives of domestic servants in England from the 1880s to World War II, as shown in the books "Master and Servant: Love and Labor in the English Industrial Age" by Carolyn Steedman and "Mrs. Woolf and the Servants" by Alison Light. The books note the tangled emotions surrounding the master/servant relationship and liken it to sibling relationships or a parent/child bond. Changes wrought by World War II as women were needed in factories and farms are noted.
