- Abstract
Since Al-Jahiz stressed his known quote: "Poetry is an industry and example of weaving and a kind of painting" figure of speech has occupied a prominent place in critical studies. It was even said that "Painting is silent poetry and poetry is a speaking painting". The figure of speech, with all its graphic and artistic meanings, takes an influential place in the recipient. Addressing figurative approach in forming pre-Islamic poetry is a critical phenomenon that is significant in understanding this poetry, revealing its artistic values and the means of pre-Islamic poets to achieve them. One of the research objectives is to know the motives that led pre-Islamic poets to prefer this artistic approach that prevailed over their poetry. Thus, expression in the figure of speech has become the main characteristic of poetry. In that, she followed an analytical approach to find out the elements of the image and to determine the relationships of its parts and their connection to the whole. The research was also based on induction, monitoring, and deduction, drawing on the experiences of ancient and modern critics. The study also focused on the practical side, where the analytical approach is concerned. Because it is the closest to the nature of the subject, and the research plan necessitated entering the world of poetry among the preIslamic in an attempt to explain, and to know the controls of the pictorial method and its tributaries, so the research was supported by practical examples in which the characteristics that made the poetic image an artistic entity vibrant human life emerged. Based on presentation of the applied models in the research, it has been found that pre-Islamic poet was keen to record his various emotions and feelings towards life and the people around him, in a poetic language that takes the figure of speech as the basis for such poetic structure.
