- Abstract
GLO:KQE/01apr21:mms12763-fig-0004.jpg PHOTO (COLOR): 4 Age distribution of Guiana dolphins, Sotalia guianensis, incidentally captured in fishing nets (a) and stranded (b) in southeastern Brazil between 1995 and 2016. gl Total lengths of franciscana dolphins ranged from 59.0 cm to 125.0 cm (mean: 106.0 ± 1.36 cm) in males and from 66.5 cm to 146.0 cm (mean: 113.3 ± 2.08 cm) in females. Life history is still poorly known for two small cetacean species found along the Atlantic coast of Latin America: the franciscana dolphin, I Pontoporia blainvillei i (Gervais & d'Orbigny, 1844) and the Guiana dolphin, I Sotalia guianensis i (Van Bénedén, 1864). GLO:KQE/01apr21:mms12763-fig-0006.jpg PHOTO (COLOR): 6 Growth curve predicted by the original form of von Bertalanffy model for pooled data of Guiana dolphins, Sotalia guianensis, from southeastern Brazil. gl Asymptotic lengths estimated for franciscana dolphins vary considerably among studies. However, the estimated asymptotic lengths reported by Ramos et al. (2000), Di Beneditto and Ramos (2004) and Ramos et al. (2010) for Guiana dolphins from farther north (Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro) are quite larger than those from the south (São Paulo) (Table 3).
