- Abstract
A biography of Louis Marvin Herman, an emeritus professor at University of Hawaii at Manoa, is presented. He was born in 1930 in Queens, New York, to Jewish immigrants and studied at City College of New York. He spent his college summers lifeguarding at New York City's Far Rockaway beach. Lou pioneered the scientific study of Hawaii's humpback whales and he also set out on a mission to characterize the "cognitive characteristics" of the bottlenose dolphin before he passed away in 2016.
