- Abstract
Paul Ballus (1783 Modra - 1848 Bratislava), well−known thanks to his topo-graphical publication Preßburg und seine Umgebungen (1823), published as a former town councillor and secretary of the Orphans' Union an occasional German print Geschichte der Entstehung und Gründung des Waisenhauses in der k. freien Krönungsstadt Preßburg (in 1833). In this work, Ballus describes circumstances of founding of the social institution for orphans in Bratislava in the 1830s. The publication includes an appendix with documents providing information on financing the orphanage, the organization and running of its activities, its personnel department, but also e.g. about the location of the orphanage and description of the building. The authors of the paper outline basic features of Ballus's occasional prints, analyze the individual parts of the publication and study the foundation of the orphanage in the context of the period evelopment of social welfare in the first half of the 19th century in Hungary.
