- Abstract
The present work reviews the biographical aspects of the Majorcan naval guard and cartographer Martí Maria de Boneo i Villalonga (1759-1805), as well as his cartographic productions. Member of a lineage of navy soldiers and related to the most prominent Majorcan Enlightenment referents, Martí Maria Boneo trained at the Cádiz Marine Academy under the mastery of the cartographers Vicente Tofiño de San Miguel and José Varela. As a member of the Boundary Parties of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata -in full conflict with the Portuguese crown and its interests in Brazil-he carried out many explorations and hydrographic campaigns along the Southern American fluvial systems. Recent studies point to him as the de facto author of the Tebicuary Map and assistant of the Spherical Charter of Paraguay by Felix de Azara. Another of his productions is one of the first urban maps of Buenos Aires. This map that exudes the aftertaste of the urban cartography of Palma at the end of the 18th century.
