- Abstract
The article discusses the issues related to academic freedom and loyalty oaths in the U.S. Social meaning of academic freedom is mentioned. Details of the U.S. Supreme Court case Sweezy v. Bew Hampshire are given in which recognition of academic freedom at the core of the free speech guarantee of the first amendment was recognized by the Court. Infringement of the liberty guaranteed to a teacher under the fourteenth amendment by a state statute prohibiting the teaching of languages, other than English, was held by the Court in Meyer v. Nebraska case. Information and the overall impact of loyalty-security programs on free institutions is provided.
