- Authors
Lobato, María Luisa
- Abstract
The article analyzes the circumstances of Agustín Moreto's life during his final years in Toledo (1657-1669), his incorporation into the Brotherhood of the School of Christ, and his ordination as a priest in 1659. In addition, it describes the means of subsistence that made possible his dedication to Letters and to the ecclesiastical positions that he held, beginning with the concession, in 1634, of a simple servant's benefit in the church of Santa María Magdalena by Íñigo López de Mendoza, Marquis of Mondéjar. The reasons that could have led the Marquis of Mondéjar to support a young Moreto are proposed here for the first time, as well as the conflicts that arose from the granting of the aforementioned benefice, which lasted for twenty-five years, until its ownership was definitively recognized and proven indispensable for his priestly ordination to be possible.
