- Abstract
In North and South Elizabeth Gaskell describes the conflicts and integration of agricultural civilization in the south and industrial civilization in the north by featuring the traditional model of the contrast between country and city. This article takes the approach of Ethical Literary Criticism, showing the changes of ethical relations and ethical conflicts in the process of the transformation from agricultural civilization to industrial civilization through three ethical choices of Thornton from the son of a failed businessman to the open-minded factory owner and the identity construction of Margaret from country to city. The new ethical relationship based on trade while fulling of warmth between Thornton with sympathy and responsibility and workers is a product of the combination of traditional ethics and the economic relationship in industrial society. Margaret's participation in industrial activities with business ideas as a creditor not only shows that industrial civilization has an irreversible development trend compared with agricultural civilization but also conveys a cultural vision of the combination of morality and wealth.
