- Abstract
The present study aimed to gather ethnobotanical information about the riparian flora used by the population of Rajouri - Poonch region of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Information was gathered through direct interviews by using semi structured questionnaire. Gujjars and Bakerwals are the two main tribal communities residing in the region. A total of 65 respondents were interviewed and 88 plant species belonging to 49 families were recorded. Different parts of plants such as roots, stem, bark, flower, fruit and seed were used for cure of several diseases such as cough, hypertension, rheumatism, cold, fever, typhoid, jaundice, toothache, hair loss and kidney diseases. In addition to the medicinal importance of the plants found in riparian regions, they also play a key role in controlling soil erosion, floods and stabilizing river banks. However, these valuable plant resources are declining alarmingly due to anthropogenic activities such as river valley projects, large-scale encroachment, developmental activities, deforestation, urbanization, agriculture expansion, soil erosion, mining and siltation. Therefore, it was required to undertake a detailed ethnobotanical study of the important medicinal plants found in riparian regions and the documentation of their uses in traditional medicines by local tribes for their conservation.
