- Abstract
The article focuses on the epistemology of narratives of self, or the role of narrative in considering people's pasts and futures. The author considers how people engage in "narrative thinking," how people can use their imaginations to consider "non-actual episodes" of past or future events, and how people's understanding and interactions with literature help to shape their thinking. A definition of narrative which incorporates a series of events, coherence, and episode or episodes is presented. The article also explores how and why people invest narratives with emotion.
