- Abstract
The development of pentylenetetrazole kindling is accompanied by neuron degeneration and death in different hippocampal fields. Nonetheless, data on the development of neurodegenerative processes in the dentate gyrus (DG) remain contradictory. The study reported here, performed on 20 male Wistar rats, established that the extent of neuron death varied in different zones of the DG. By the end of the development of pentylenetetrazole kindling, the superior and inferior blades of the DG showed cell degeneration, though the number of neurons did not decrease; at the angle of the DG, there was a decrease in the number of neurons from the early stages of kindling. This provides grounds for suggesting the existence of functional heterogeneity in the granule neuron population in terms of sensitivity to the harmful actions of convulsions.
