- Abstract
The Orient and elements associated with it are still a trendy part of music, books, photographs and films, even today because they are attractive to the viewer due to their exoticism. In Western cinematography, we often encounter movies set in the East or at least inspired by it. These movies bring culture, history and an overall view of the countries to the viewer in their opinion as they imagine them, and, therefore, they are quite orientalizing. One of the well-known movies drawing from Japanese history is The Last Samurai (2003) by American director Edward Zwick. In the story, the main character named Nathan Algren is sent to Japan to modernize the country and defeat rebels. However, after spending some time with rebelling samurai, he accepts Japanese culture and becomes one of the last samurai fighting for traditional values. This work aims to find Orientalism elements in the movie, divide them into more general categories and then analyze them in more detail. This work tries to discover mainly ornamental and negative Orientalisms, focusing on the main character N. Algren, who represents the West’s power. This paper finds how Japan is portrayed in the film by an American director and how Western society perceives it.
