- Abstract
Speech and language disorders are a frequent consequence of central nervous system diseases or injuries in adults and children. Adults and children with severe speech and language disorders are referred to speech and language therapy. The therapy aims at improving communication skills and achieving the highest possible independence in social interactions. Many persons have co-morbid cognitive disorders, severe disabilities of motor functions and visual perception, which affect their access to symbols and assistive devices. The use of augmentative and alternative communication thus requires precise assessment of a person's abilities done by different professionals. The speech and language therapist then selects among assistive technology, suggests necessary adaptations and trains the person in the use of a communication device.
