- Abstract
The article reports on the finding that physician members of the Society for Adolescent Medicine believe that abortion should be available for adolescents under some circumstances. Virtually all physician members of the Society for Adolescent Medicine (SAM) believe that abortion should be available for adolescents under some circumstances, and 42% would prescribe medical abortion if the medications were approved for that purpose by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, according to the results of a 1996 survey. By contrast, only 2% of SAM doctors currently provide surgical abortion for their adolescent patients, although most refer them elsewhere for abortion services. Ninety-six percent of the doctors surveyed prescribe at least one contraceptive method for their adolescent patients. While condoms and the pill are offered by 92-93% of respondents, most other reversible methods are provided by about 40-80%; the exceptions are the IUD and cervical cap, each of which is provided by no more than 10% of respondents.
