- Abstract
The article reports on the finding that a regimen of tamoxifen and misoprostol may be an option for inducing abortion early in pregnancy. A regimen of tamoxifen and misoprostol may be another option for inducing abortion early in pregnancy, results of a clinical trial suggest. For the study, 100 healthy women who were no more than eight weeks pregnant took an oral dose of 20 mg of tamoxifen daily for four days; if the gestational sac was still present four days later, they were given 800 mcg of misoprostol vaginally, and this dose was repeated if the sac was still detected 24 hours later. Overall, 92% of the women had a complete abortion, most within 24 hours after receiving the misoprostol; 2% had incomplete abortions, and 6% had continuing pregnancies.
