- Abstract
The article focuses on the elements of timing and response in the balance sheet of banking from 1953 to 1955. The purpose of this research is to examine the response of U.S. banks to changes in their reserve position. Taking aggregate earning assets as the general indicator of balance-sheet response, an attempt is made to measure both the speed and size by which earning assets react to changes in reserve holdings. A monthly series on total earning assets of banks is composed for the period 1953 to 1955 and examined for its functional relationship to "effective" reserves.
