- Abstract
This article discusses the exploration of infrared (IR) and terahertz (THz) quantum technologies and their potential applications in communication, sensing, and imaging. The focus is on the exploitation of novel materials and the harnessing of intersubband transitions, which involve the excitation of electrons between quantized energy levels within quantum wells or superlattices. The article also highlights the importance of selecting and engineering materials with tailored properties for efficient operation in these spectral ranges, including traditional semiconductors and emerging materials such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), and topological insulators. The article concludes by emphasizing the significant advancements that can be achieved through the synergistic interplay between material science, quantum physics, and device engineering in the field of IR and THz quantum devices.
