- Title
Traitors and Scoundrels: Franco-American Responses to the French-Canadian Elite.
- Authors
McEwan, Eileen
- Abstract
The French Canadians that settled in New England between 1850 and 1930 were hoping to maintain a French stronghold in the United States. With each wave of migration, the French-Canadian elites made speeches to their departing compatriots, encouraging them to return home. This article examines the strategies made in these speeches, varying from denigration to glorification. Franco-American authors Honoré Beaugrand and Emma Dumas countered these images by promoting positive literary representations of the French New England communities.
