Requiem for a river: extinctions, climate change and the last of the Yangtze.
- Authors
DUDGEON, DAVID
- Abstract
The author reflects on the threat of the freshwater biodiversity in Yangtze River, China wherein certain species, such as megafishes and dolphins, are facing extinction along with the impact of climate change. He reveals some factors that drive the extinction, such as the construction of Three Gorges Reservoir's dam cascade upstream combined with overfishing and sand mining. He notes the conflict of the river's biodiversity conservation to the country's economic development.
