And What About French Women Writers?
- Authors
DeJean, Joan
- Abstract
The article focuses on the future and the poorly recognized contributions of the French women writers during the eighteenth century's Age of Enlightenment. It notes the progress of the studies on the 18th century French feminist theory since the founding of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ASECS) 1975 in comparison with the English and American counterparts. It points out the contributions of the French women writers Graffigny, Riccoboni and Charrière, as well as the reasons why their works were not largely explored by the French feminist theory. It also cites the contributions of the lesser known women writers of France such as Caumont de la Force, Bédacier Durand, and Fontette de Sommery.
