- Abstract
In this paper I present stoicism as a practical philosophy and a way of life. The goal of stoicism is attainment of unshakable sense of happiness and well-being. Essential part of stoic path towards this goal is the effort aimed at getting rid of destructive passions of lust, fear, delight and distress, and cultivating positive rational emotions of wish, caution and joy. One can cultivate her emotions by means of mental exercises. These exercises can be broadly classified into four groups: training of mindfulness, reevaluation of the objects of passions, devaluation of passions themselves and mental preparation for irritating situations. The concept of "The Sage" functions as an ideal role model for adepts of stoic philosophy and exemplifies the emotional qualities which the adepts strive to attain.
