- Abstract
In 2019, Canadian Anatomical Pathology residency training programs were required by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to implement a competency-based medical education (CBME) curriculum. This paradigm shift from a traditional non-CBME model may require substantial reconstruction of the curriculum; however, given this relatively new requirement, specific direction on implementation and evaluation of this process in pathology education is lacking. In this study, we outline the novel use of Kern's curricular model to implement a CBME curriculum in gynecologic pathology and identify its associated benefits and challenges. Benefits included the utility of an outcome-based model, learner-supervisor unity, learner-centered approach, assessment for learning, early identification of knowledge gaps, and increased observation and assessment of non-Medical Expert competencies. Challenges included the change and implementation process, increased resource requirements, choosing assessments wisely, skill difference of supervisors in the CBME environment, and gaining learner acceptance. Overarching lessons learned from implementation were the need for stakeholder engagement, assessment refinement, iterative feedback on and evaluation of the curriculum, and using available resources to lessen the burden of implementation. Our study of the process and lessons learned from CBME implementation at our institution may assist other centres with the transition to CBME in pathology training programs.
