- Abstract
This essay explores the history of the Department of Pathology at the Winnipeg General Hospital between 1918 and 1937. The essay reveals that its historical development was determined by the social transformation of the hospital, which in turn depended on the increasing economic contributions of the middle class, advances in surgery, and changes to the economic conditions in Canadian society. The Department in this period was under the directorship of William Boyd, who oversaw the transition of a practice based on the autopsy to one dominated by the biopsy. The essay also documents the contribution of Boyd as a practicing pathologist to the hospital, a topic not previously addressed in the literature.
