- Abstract
The article examines the extent to which guideline-based tobacco dependence treatments in the U.S. are covered by state Medicaid programs for pregnant women and under Early and Periodic Screening, Detection, and Treatment (EPSDT) for children and their parents who smoke. Despite strong evidence that health insurance coverage for tobacco dependence treatments increases the use of services and quit rates, the guideline for treating tobacco dependence is not being followed by the majority of Medicaid and EPSDT programs.
