- Abstract
Spoken language and music constitute two complex systems of communication, which present great cultural diversity, but which are nevertheless constructed in a relatively similar way. Both arise from the combination of simpler elements: phonemes, words and phrases that are linked together in language, and sounds, melodies, harmonies, rhythms and timbres in music; they are governed by a series of rules, also culturally diverse but which in all cases serve to facilitate the understanding of the he message they convey; they allow internal states to communicate, including emotional states; they reflect aspects of reality and at the same time allow mental models of reality to be altered; creative processes are involved in their dynamic genesis; and both their production and understanding are supported by the functional capacities of the brain. Do music and spoken language have anything in common in terms of their genesis, understanding and interpretation within the brain? Or, in other words, do they share neural bases? If so, can we use them in educational settings to synergistically enhance both? This article reviews the current state of the art on this topic and discusses the biological basis, both evolutionary and neural, of music and spoken language; it will be seen how they interact synergistically in the brain, and it will be proposed from neuroeducational perspectives how they can be used in educational contexts to enhance each other, with the learning, cognitive and identity-building advantages that this entails
