- Abstract
In this article, the authors discuss the classification of all mycolactone-producing mycobacteria (MPM) as Mycobacterium ulcerans (M. ulcerans). The authors mention that M. marinum and M. ulcerans are genetically related species that both causes different human skin diseases like Buruli ulcer and minor granulomatous skin lesions. The authors state that M. marinum and M. ulcerans share more than 4,000 genes with 98.3% average DNA sequence identity despite their different phenotypes.
