- Title
SOCIAL CAPITAL AND EQUALITY: TOCQUEVILLE'S LEGACY.
- Authors
FERRAGINA, Emanuele
- Abstract
The article discusses the concept of social capital as related to income inequality. Particular focus is given to theories of social capital outlined by political scientist Robert Putnam. The author explores criticisms of Putnam's theories by scholars Nicholas Lemann, Irene T. Thomson and Theda Skocpol concerning social inclusion, community, civic engagement, and trust. It is suggested that regions with high Gini coefficients often have low levels of social capital. Details on the writings of French social scientist Alexis de Tocqueville concerning equality are presented. Other topics include Putnam's books "Making Democracy Work" and" Bowling Alone" and comparisons of social equality in Europe and the United States.
