- Abstract
The article discusses research on the native American tribe called Mandan and its medicine man Old Bear, or Mah-Tó-He-Hah, by nineteenth-century painter George Catlin. Catlin's painting of Old Bear appears in the article. The Mandan settlement is said to have been near present-day Bismark, North Dakota. Assistance that the Mandan tribe gave to members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the winter of 1804 is noted. Catlin and his students reportedly met with Old Bear in 1832 as part of Catlin's teachings on herbal remedies and ceremonial practices.
