The article discusses the function of fortified structures in urban landscapes during the Late Antiquity period from the second to the eighth century in the region of Anatolia in Turkey. Topics include the dual function of strongholds as defensive barriers and as monuments in city layouts; the spatial, social, and symbolic context of city fortifications; and the non-military role of fortified buildings as presented in a case study of the city landscape of Pessinus, Turkey.
