- Abstract
Considering the importance of graphs in our lives, how graphics are given a place in statistics teaching also gains importance. Therefore, how graphs are placed in statistics teaching is important for students to enhance a conceptual understanding of graphs. Textbooks are also among the important elements for our teaching process. Thus, in this study, it is aimed to examine the activities for graphs in the teaching of statistics in middle school mathematics textbooks in terms of graphical competencies and graph comprehension levels. The present study follows a qualitative research approach, and document analysis method is used. The data were collected in line with the examinations made in the mathematics textbooks recommended by the Ministry of National Education and used for the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade levels in middle schools in the 2020-2021 academic year. When the results of the study are examined, it is seen that the questions in the activities in the textbooks are generally limited to lower graph comprehension levels and graph competencies. Therefore, it is recommended to give place in activities that include questions that will measure higher level understandings of graphs in textbooks.
