Adverse Effects of Withdrawal of Chronic Lithium Therapy On Liver--A Histological Study.

- Abstract
The article discusses a research study on chronic lithium therapy for the liver and the adverse effects of its withdrawal. Study subjects were 30 adult male albino rabbits that were divided into control and experimental groups that were given oral dosage of lithium carbonate powder and then the livers of rabbits were removed for gross and histological study. Results showed that control group animals stayed active and healthy while those in the experimental group exhibited increase in body weight after two weeks of sudden withrawal and histological examination showed intact liver architecture and capsule. Conclusions indicated the increase in serum lithium levels with daily lithium dosage while cholangistis increased after sudden lithium withdrawal.
