RABBI STEPHEN S. WISE: Prophet of Portland, Oregon.
- Authors
Kramer, William M.
- Abstract
The article offers information on Rabbi Stephen S. Wise of Portland, Oregon. It notes that Wise is viewed by the Jews, as the voice of Zionism. Meanwhile, the gentiles viewed him as a broad-minded American rabbi who always says what he wants to say for every humanitarian cause. It also notes that Wise considered entering partisan politics during his stay in Portland as a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate. He had been a part of a non-partisan group of single taxers who helped establish the Portland, Oregon Forum. A book on Oregon Jewry described Wise as a brilliant orator who gave sermons and lectures on both religious and social issues throughout the state. Rabbi Wise's observation on Portland is also discussed. INSET: THE REIGN OF LAWLESSNESS.
