- Abstract
Rainfall data and methods Daily rainfall data were obtained from the National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI) and from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Information System for the 18-22 September 2017 period. When Hurricane I Maria i is removed and then added to the TC rainfall climatology of PR, we can see that it had a major impact on the average TC rainfall of the island ( I Figure i s 6(a) and (b)). We also examine the hurricane extreme rainfall from a climatological perspective, by comparing Hurricane I Maria i with other tropical cyclones (TCs) that have impacted PR since 1956. Similar to other major hurricanes that have impacted the island, Hurricane I Maria i 's rainfall also exhibited high accumulations in the central mountains region of the island which suggests that the storm's rainfall totals were orographically enhanced.
