- Abstract
Gangsta rap has been the subject of public controversy for quite some time, especially with regard to norm violations such as criminality. This contribution analyses this topic based on interactions of young people who produce songs of the genre gangsta rap. Predicated on group discussions, the focus is on how young rappers integrate criminality into songs. The results show that the use of semantics of criminality is controlled within the group and bound to specifications of authenticity: certain types of crimes may only be thematized by certain persons who vouch for the authenticity of the depictions. In the confrontation with criticism from outside, however, this requirement can become inverted: Representations of crime then appear as mere simulations or stagings without real content. In any case, these representations follow socially regulated standards of a musical genre that demands provocation.
