- Title
Beyond Tolerance and Persecution: Reassessing Our Approach to Medieval Convivencia.
- Authors
Ray, Jonathan
- Abstract
This article re-assesses the Spanish Jews' approach to medieval convivencia,or coexistence, a term that has been used to describe the tripartite society of medieval Iberia. According to the author, the resurgence in popularity of medieval Spanish civilization and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East will continue to sustain interest in the subject of convivencia as well as to distort its interpretation. The author believes that the history of Iberian Jewry, and of medieval Spain in general, holds relevance beyond the search for utopian models of interfaith harmony or the roots of modern antisemitism.
