- Title
Fear of Purim: Y. L. Peretz and the Canonization of Yiddish Theater.
- Authors
Steinlauf, Michael C.
- Abstract
The article focuses on Yiddish theater's canonization in eastern Europe. According to Ignacy Suesser, Yiddish theater is a folk theater that cannot be judged by standards suitable to artistic theater. The energy of the Yiddish stage and its audience is a stable theme in the memoirs and reminiscences of actors and theater goers throughout the century. The theater, though vulgar, is involved with its audience and existed to meet its need. The author claims that the reaction of Y. L. Peretz to Yiddish theater in revolutionary Warsaw, Poland is intolerant and that his anger is directed not just against the theater but against its audience.
