- Abstract
The topic of trade relations between Mezzogiorno and Adriatic region in the late Middle Ages has attracted inconsistent interest. Ragusa offers valuable archival documentation to trace the composition and business operations of the Apulian merchant class in the Adriatic maritime space between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The analysis of Ragusan sources provides new insights regarding the prominence of Apulians as the grain traders, as well as their connections with the great Florentine banking and trading companies. Notably, the volumes of grain sales show how some Regnicoli were able to profit from the Ragusan demand, managing to achive a certain degree of autonomy from the Florentines active in Apulia.
