- Abstract
The article analyzes the scope of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, supporting the freedom of the press, with regard to defamation claims by former public officials. It presents an analysis of the status of a former public official in various situations like when he/she was a public officer and when he/she left the office and discusses whether the New York Times decision is applicable in those situations.
