- Abstract
The article discusses how director Whit Stillman's 1990 film "Metropolitan" reworks the moral themes of English author Jane Austen's 1814 novel "Mansfield Park." Topics covered include the role of Austen's morality in how the film depicts hypocrisy among New York City's upper class in the 1980s, the virtue and destructiveness of hypocrisy in the novel, and the relevance of the novel's morality in Stillman's modern world. Other film adaptations of the novel are also mentioned.
