- Abstract
Background. The study concerned examinations taken during the 2 & 3 act of 32 nd America's Cup in Valencia (4-17 of October 2004). The purpose of this study was to present the prevalence of characteristic injuries in sports sailing, statistic analysis of correlations between particular injuries, and presentation of the unknown sport discipline. Material and methods. The examined sailors belonged to 7 from 8 crews, participating in the competition. The study was based on the competitors' charts. Because of the nature of the study it was possible to state the correlation of the examined traits and to make the qualitative analysis. The data showed a statistically significant correlation between the diagnosed injuries. Results. Among 54 sailors who took part in the competition, the most frequent injuries were: the shoulder girdle, back and neck muscles (34 cases), the low back injuries (17 cases). Grinder's position on the boat included the biggest number of injuries in the sailors group. Conclusions. A major difference was observed between the injuries in sailing and other professional sports. Furthermore, a diversity of injuries was observed, directly related to the yacht position of the sailor. The study results show training and post-start biological regeneration mistakes.
