- Abstract
The reformist regime of Alfonso López Pumarejo in Colombia, 1934-38, sought to reduce the power of the Church as part of a broad modernization program and as an expression of long-standing Liberal Party anticlericalism. While the 1936 constitutional reform did reduce the Church's role in education, most Liberal plans of the era were toned down or aborted entirely. This was largely because of the fury of Church opposition in alliance with the Conservative Party, especially as both groups moved toward Falangist-style "integralist" ideas. It also, however, reflected the Liberal Party's ambiguous situation in an overwhelmingly Catholic society. López's goal of a secularized society has been progressively realized since the 1930's, but more as a result of broader social change than through legal-political initiatives.
