- Abstract
Tungiasis is a cutaneous parasitosis original from America caused by the female Tunga penetrans, a flea from Tungidae family. It is characterized by painful and pruritic, papular or nodular, single or multiple lesions, that usually affect the feet, principally the subungueal and periungueal areas. The diagnosis of tungiasis is made by the clinical features in a patient from an endemic zone. Histopathologic analysis shows exoesqueleton remains, internal structures and eggs of the Tunga penetrans. The treatment of choice is surgical removal of the flea. This paper reports a case of tungiasis in a female patient with a painful and pruritic nodular lesion in the left sole with confirmatory histopathologic features, treated successfully surgically and with oral ivermectine.
