- Abstract
The article discusses the life and career of the late Black Canadian heavyweight boxer Lawrence "Larry" Gains, and it mentions his boxing record and his efforts to secure opportunities to battle for championship titles between 1927 and 1932. The lowering of racial barriers for Black boxers such as Gains is examined, along with his Canadian, World Coloured, and British Empire boxing title victories in the twentieth century. The social conditions of Black athletes in the 1900s are assessed.
