The article features Aaron Swartz, a programmer and Internet activist known for his participation in developing several Internet maintays such as Creative Commons, and Reddit. Swartz has founded Demand Progress, an advocacy site that runs online campaigns focused on civil liberties, civil rights, and government reform. He was accused of downloading over four million articles from JSTOR, a non-profit digital academic database, with the aim of distributing the articles to a peer-to-peer network.
