- Title
A Need for Social Justice Unionism.
- Authors
Fletcher Jr., Bill; GAPASIN, FERNANDO
- Abstract
The article argues that the framework used in U.S. trade unionism is fundamentally flawed and a new framework needs to be adopted. The author examines a perceived struggle among social classes within the nation and differentiates between this struggle and the struggle of labor unions to organize and operate effectively. Elements of racial and gender-based discrimination within the U.S. are also discussed. The paper references a project developed within the city of Stamford, Connecticut that studied the potential for the labor sector and the community to form strategic partnerships within the larger context of community economic development. It is urged that elements of social justice must be incorporated into unionism.
