IS SOFTWARE SAFE?
- Authors
O'Connor, P. D. T.
- Abstract
There is some public anxiety, and professional controversy, about the safety of critical systems which are under the control of computer software. The two recent crashes of A320 airliners, which use software driven primary flight controls, and, in particular, a recent BBC TV programme on the topic, have brought the question out of the specialist arena and placed it starkly in front of the public. In the case of the crash in Europe, seen on TV by millions, the A320 system (hardware and software) did what any aircraft control system would do when placed in a low-speed, near-stall approach to an obstacle that is too high—it flew into it.
